Research interests
Stewart is a trained Medical Physicist who has worked in teaching hospitals providing scientific and technical support to Nuclear Medicine, Positron Emission Tomography, Radiology and Radiotherapy departments. His academic qualifications include a BSc. (hons) in Physics (1984) and an MSc. in Medical Physics (1988) where he wrote a thesis on micro cone beam tomography.
He was awarded a PhD in X-ray Physics at Monash University (2002) and has since been engaged in the commercialisation of x-ray based non-destructive testing methods with industrial partners and and scientific research organisations.
Current research is directed towards applied x-ray physics
-
development of gas filled and solid state photon counting detectors, and low cost data acquisition modules.
-
understanding the relationship between diagnostic energy CT numbers and mega-voltage tissue interaction parameters.
-
reconstruction techniques for computed tomography.
-
the registration of multi-modality 3D data sets.
-
development of new compounds for clinical administration as radiographic contrast media.
-
exploiting emerging methods of materials analysis based upon elastic and inelastic x-ray scattering.
-
liasing with industry in the design and operation of x-ray based non-destructive testing instrumentation.
