Engineering interests
Andrew is a detector system development engineer who specialises in the design of high speed detection system for synchrotron radiation and medical applications. The use of real time data reduction and processing in Field programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) is fundamental to the operation of these systems. Experience gained at Daresbury Laboratory, UK and the ESRF in Grenoble will utilised to produce state of the art instrumentation. Specific areas of interest include energy resolved imaging, picosecond time measurement, Real time DSP, Gbit serial links and programmable System on Chip (SOC) developments.
Current development projects:
- The development of an energy resolving pixel detector targeting Biomedical imaging applications capable of tissue identification and diagnosis. Based on CZT material, the system includes the development of an in house Application Specific Integrated circuit (ASIC) to provide the front end Signal processing and an in housed designed PCI card process and histogram the data in real time.
Previous development projects:
- The design and development of a 20MSPS Combined Small Angle and Wide Angle X-ray Scattering (SAXSWAXS) system.
- The analysis and improvement of electron based detection systems.
- The specification and commissioning of a soft Xray Spectroscopy system.
- The design of a novel Time to digital converter with 20 ps resolution.
